Barbell Glute Bridge

The barbell glute bridge is a glute exercise performed lying on the floor with a barbell resting across your hips. You drive your hips up until your body forms a straight line from shoulders to knees. It loads the glutes heavily with a short range of motion and a stable setup, making it a simple alternative to the hip thrust.

What muscles does the barbell glute bridge work?

Primary movers

  • Gluteus maximus

Assisting muscles

  • Hamstrings
  • Quadriceps
  • Adductors
  • Core

The glutes extend the hip to drive the bar up and are strongest at the top, where the glute bridge puts the most tension. The floor removes the bottom range of a hip thrust.

The hamstrings assist the glutes, and the quads hold the knees steady. The core keeps your ribs down so the work stays in the hips.

Lying on the floor keeps the setup simple. You do not need a bench and the range of motion is shorter, which makes it easier to load heavily.

The short range means a lighter stretch at the bottom, so many lifters pair it with hip thrusts to cover the full range.

How to do the barbell glute bridge

Setup

  1. 1

Sit on the floor with the barbell over your legs and a pad on the bar.

  2. 2

Roll the bar to sit in your hip crease.

  3. 3

Lie back with your knees bent and your feet flat about hip-width apart.

  4. 4

Hold the bar steady with both hands.

Execution

  1. 1

Drive through your heels and lift your hips toward the ceiling.

  2. 2

Keep your chin tucked and your ribs down.

  3. 3

Squeeze your glutes hard at the top for a moment.

  4. 4

Reach a straight line from your shoulders to your knees.

  5. 5

Lower under control until the plates barely touch the floor.

  6. 6

    Repeat for all reps.

Common barbell glute bridge mistakes

Arching the lower back

Overextending at the top shifts work from the glutes to the spine.

The fix: Tuck your ribs down and finish with your glutes, not your back.

Feet too far away

Pushing your feet far out biases the hamstrings.

The fix: Set your feet so your shins are near vertical at the top.

Bar rolling

An unsteady bar throws off the rep and can bruise.

The fix: Use a pad and hold the bar with both hands.

Rushing the reps

Bouncing off the floor removes tension from the glutes.

The fix: Pause at the top and lower under control.

Use it as a main glute exercise on its own or after squats. Pause for a second at the top to maximise tension.

Frequently asked questions

Barbell glute bridge or hip thrust?

The hip thrust has a longer range of motion. The bridge is simpler and easier to set up. Both load the glutes well.

How heavy should I go?

Start with the empty bar and add weight steadily. The shorter range of motion means some lifters can bridge about as much as they hip thrust, so let your glutes and form set the weight.

Does it hurt my hips?

A thick pad stops the bar from digging in. Roll it into the crease of your hips.

Where should I feel it?

In your glutes. If you feel your hamstrings or lower back, move your feet closer and tuck your ribs.

Do I need a rack?

No. Sit on the floor and roll the bar over your legs. Use standard 45 cm plates so the bar sits at a comfortable height over your hips.
