Handstand Push-Ups
The handstand push-up is an advanced bodyweight press where you hold a handstand against a wall, lower your head toward the floor and press back up. It loads the shoulders and triceps with your whole bodyweight in a vertical pressing path, making it the bodyweight equivalent of a heavy overhead press.

What muscles does the handstand push-ups work?
Primary movers
- Anterior deltoid
- Triceps brachii
Assisting muscles
- Lateral deltoid
- Trapezius
- Serratus anterior
- Rectus abdominis
In a handstand, your entire bodyweight rests on your shoulders and arms. The front deltoids and triceps lift it as you press up, so the load is far heavier than on a pike push-up.
The traps and serratus anterior rotate and stabilise the shoulder blades overhead. A strong shoulder girdle is what keeps the movement controlled rather than sloppy.
The core and glutes hold the body in a straight line against the wall. A banana-shaped back puts more stress on the lower back and shifts the balance.
It takes time to build. Strong wall holds, pike push-ups with raised feet and negatives all feed into a first full rep.
How to do the handstand push-ups
Setup
- 1
Place a mat on the floor beside a wall.
- 2
Kick up into a handstand with your back or chest facing the wall, heels against it.
- 3
Place your hands slightly wider than your shoulders with your fingers spread.
- 4
Squeeze your glutes and brace your abs to keep a straight line.
Execution
- 1
Bend your elbows and lower your head toward the floor under control.
- 2
Keep your elbows slightly in front of your wrists, at about 45 degrees.
- 3
Lightly touch your head to the mat, or a folded towel, at the bottom.
- 4
Press through your hands to return to a full handstand.
- 5
Lock your elbows at the top and push your shoulders up toward the ceiling.
- 6
Come down safely from the wall at the end of the set.
Common handstand push-ups mistakes
Kicking up too hard
Too much force throws you into the wall and wastes energy before you start.
The fix: Practise a controlled kick-up, or use a box or partner for entry.
Flaring the elbows
Elbows wide to the sides put a lot of strain on the shoulders.
The fix: Keep the elbows tucked and in front of the wrists.
Arching the back
A banana back rests on the wall and lets the lower back take the load.
The fix: Squeeze your glutes and abs and keep your ribs down.
Attempting it too early
Without the shoulder strength, form collapses and you risk neck and wrist injury.
The fix: Build up with pike push-ups, feet-elevated pike push-ups and wall holds first.
How many sets and reps?
| Goal | Sets | Reps | Load | Rest |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Strength | 4–5 | 3–6 | Bodyweight | 2–3 min |
| Building up | 3–4 | Negatives, 3–5 s lowering | Bodyweight | 2 min |
| Volume | 3 | 6–10 | Partial range or box | 90 s |
Train it twice a week on non-consecutive days. If a full rep is too hard, use negatives, a box under your hands to shorten the range, or feet-elevated pike push-ups. Warm up your wrists and shoulders. Stop if your neck or wrists hurt.

Frequently asked questions
How hard is the handstand push-up?
It is hard. You press your entire bodyweight overhead. Most people need months of work on pike push-ups and wall holds before a clean rep.
What do handstand push-ups work?
The shoulders and triceps mostly, with the traps, serratus and core stabilising. It is the bodyweight equivalent of an overhead press.
Are handstand push-ups safe?
They are safe if you have the strength and use a wall and mat. Avoid them if you have neck, wrist or shoulder problems, and never push through sharp pain.
How do I progress to handstand push-ups?
Start with pike push-ups, move to feet-elevated pike push-ups, practise wall holds, then do slow negatives against the wall.
Should my chest or back face the wall?
Chest to the wall gives better alignment and builds towards freestanding handstands. Back to the wall is easier to enter. Either is fine for strength.
