Incline Barbell Bench Press
The incline barbell bench press is a compound pressing movement performed on a bench set to roughly 30 degrees. Angling the torso shifts emphasis onto the clavicular head of the pectoralis major, the upper chest, while still allowing the heavy barbell loading that flat pressing permits.

The pectoralis major has two functional regions, and they respond to different arm angles. The sternal head, the large lower and middle portion, pulls the arm across the body horizontally, which is what flat pressing trains. The clavicular head runs from the collarbone and pulls the arm up and across, which requires a pressing angle above horizontal.
Setting the bench to an incline puts the upper arm on that upward path, so the clavicular fibres do considerably more of the work. This is not a matter of 'targeting' by feel, the fibre orientation genuinely differs, and the two regions can be trained somewhat independently.
The angle matters, and steeper is not better. Around 30 degrees maximises upper chest involvement while keeping the movement a chest press. By 45 degrees the anterior deltoid has taken over a substantial share, and past that it becomes closer to a seated shoulder press with a chest contribution.
The anterior deltoid works harder here than on a flat bench at any incline, which is unavoidable, shoulder flexion is part of the movement. This is also why incline pressing tends to fatigue the shoulders more and why most people press meaningfully less weight on an incline.
The triceps still finish every rep, and the serratus anterior holds the shoulder blades against the ribcage throughout. As with any barbell press, keeping the shoulder blades retracted is what gives the chest a stable base to press from.
How to do the incline barbell bench press
Setup

Set the bench to roughly 30 degrees, one or two notches up from flat on most adjustable benches.

Position yourself so the bar sits above your eyes or slightly above your upper chest when racked.

Grip the bar slightly wider than shoulder-width, with your wrists stacked over your forearms.

Pull your shoulder blades together and down and drive them into the bench.

Plant your feet flat on the floor and unrack the bar to a position over your upper chest.
Execution

Lower the bar under control towards your upper chest, just below the collarbone.

Keep your elbows at roughly 45–60 degrees from your torso rather than flared wide.

Touch lightly at the top of the chest without bouncing the bar off it.

Press up and slightly back so the bar finishes above your shoulders, not over your face.

Keep your shoulder blades pinned to the bench for the entire set.

Lock out fully at the top and re-brace before the next repetition.
Common incline barbell bench press mistakes
Setting the incline too steep
Using 45 degrees or higher because it feels like it is targeting the upper chest harder. In practice the anterior deltoid takes over a large share of the work and the chest does less, not more.
The fix: Set the bench to about 30 degrees. If your gym's bench only offers steep angles, put a plate or wedge under the flat bench instead.
Lowering the bar to the mid-chest
Using the same touch point as a flat bench. On an incline this forces the shoulders into an awkward position and defeats the purpose of the angle.
The fix: Touch just below the collarbone, at the top of your chest. The bar path on an incline is genuinely different from a flat bench.
Losing shoulder blade retraction
Letting the shoulders roll forward as the weight increases. The chest loses its base, the anterior deltoid takes over and the shoulder joint takes the strain.
The fix: Set your shoulder blades back and down before unracking and hold that position throughout, including on the way back to the rack.
Flaring the elbows out wide
Letting the upper arms drift towards perpendicular to the torso. It puts the shoulder into a vulnerable externally rotated position at the bottom of a press that already loads the shoulder heavily.
The fix: Keep the elbows at 45–60 degrees. Tucking slightly is safer and usually stronger on an incline than a wide flare.

Expect your incline bench to sit around 70–80% of your flat bench. It works well either as the primary press on one of your upper-body days or as the second movement after flat benching. Because the anterior deltoid takes a large share of the load, be mindful of total pressing volume across the week if you are also doing overhead work, the front delts are involved in all of it. Always use a spotter or safety pins on heavy sets; an incline press is harder to bail out of than a flat one.

What angle is best for incline bench press?
Around 30 degrees. That is enough to shift work onto the clavicular head of the pec while keeping the movement a chest press. At 45 degrees and above the anterior deltoid takes over a growing share of the load, so a steeper bench does not mean more upper chest work, it usually means less.
Is incline bench press better than flat bench?
Neither is better; they emphasise different regions of the same muscle. Flat pressing loads the larger sternal head and permits heavier weight, while incline pressing reaches the clavicular head that flat work covers less well. If you only did one, flat is the more complete choice, but a chest programme with both develops more evenly.
Why is my incline bench so much weaker than my flat bench?
Because it should be. The incline angle reduces the mechanical advantage of the larger sternal head and asks the smaller anterior deltoid to do more. An incline bench at 70–80% of your flat bench is normal, and the gap does not indicate a weakness.
Where should the bar touch on an incline bench press?
Just below your collarbone, at the top of the chest. Touching lower, where a flat bench bar path would take you, forces the shoulders into an awkward extended position and eliminates much of the benefit of the incline.
Does incline bench press really build the upper chest?
Yes.
