Leg Press

The leg press is a machine exercise where you push a weighted platform away from you with your feet while seated or reclined. It trains the quadriceps, glutes and adductors with no balance or spinal bracing demand, which makes it a useful way to add leg volume without the fatigue cost of squatting.

The leg press is a knee-and-hip extension movement, so the quadriceps and glutes do nearly all the work. What separates it from a squat is what is missing: no spinal loading, no balance requirement, and no upper-back or core bracing demand.

That absence is the entire point. Because your torso is supported, the limiting factor becomes your legs rather than your ability to brace, which means you can train the quads closer to genuine failure than you safely can under a barbell.

Foot placement shifts the emphasis meaningfully. A lower foot position on the platform increases knee flexion and biases the quads; a higher position increases hip flexion and recruits more glutes and hamstrings. A wider stance brings in the adductors.

The adductor magnus contributes substantially at the hip, particularly from the deepest position. It is one of the largest muscles in the lower body and is heavily involved in any deep, loaded hip flexion.

The hamstrings do relatively little, for the same reason they do little in a squat: they shorten at the hip while lengthening at the knee. Pair the leg press with a leg curl or Romanian deadlift.

How to do the leg press

Setup

    Sit with your back and hips flat against the pad. Your lower back should stay in contact throughout the whole set.

    Place your feet shoulder-width apart, roughly in the middle of the platform, with toes slightly turned out.

  3. 3

    Check that your knees will track in line with your toes when you bend them.

  4. 4

    Press the platform up and release the safety handles.

  5. 5

    Keep your hands on the handles or grips at the side and your head resting back against the pad.

Execution

    Lower the platform under control by bending your knees, taking around two seconds.

    Descend until your knees reach roughly 90 degrees or slightly beyond — as deep as you can go before your hips start to tuck under and your lower back lifts off the pad.

    Keep your knees tracking out over your toes rather than collapsing inward.

  4. 4

    Press through your whole foot, with emphasis on the heel and mid-foot rather than the toes.

  5. 5

    Drive the platform back up without locking your knees out hard at the top.

    Stop just short of full extension to keep tension on the muscle and load off the joint.

Common leg press mistakes

Going too deep and lifting the hips

Lowering past the point where your pelvis tucks under, which rounds the lower back off the pad. Under several hundred pounds of platform load this is the most dangerous thing you can do on this machine.

The fix: Find the depth where your hips stay flat against the pad and stop there. If you want more depth, work on hip mobility rather than forcing the position.

Locking the knees at the top

Snapping into full extension under heavy load transfers stress from the muscles onto the knee joint and gives your quads a rest they do not need.

The fix: Stop a few degrees short of lockout. Tension should stay on the quads for the entire set.

Half reps with a loaded sled

Stacking on plates and moving the platform six inches. It looks impressive and trains almost nothing, since the quads are barely being lengthened.

The fix: Reduce the weight to what you can control through a full range with your hips flat. Range of motion beats load on this machine every time.

Feet placed too high or too low

Very high placement takes the quads largely out of it and can strain the lower back; very low placement forces extreme knee flexion and often lifts the heels.

The fix: Start with feet mid-platform, shoulder width. Adjust deliberately from there depending on whether you want more quad or more glute.

The leg press is the best place in most programs to push close to failure on legs, because failing a rep is safe and there is no bracing to break down. That makes it an excellent complement to squats rather than a competitor — squat for strength earlier in the session, then leg press for volume. Two to four sets, twice a week, is plenty for most lifters.

Single-Leg Leg Press

Harder

One leg at a time exposes strength differences between sides and doubles the load per limb at half the total weight. Useful after an injury.

The free-weight equivalent. Demands balance, bracing and upper-back strength, and builds far more transferable strength — but costs much more recovery.

Alternative

A more upright, squat-like machine path with the load on your shoulders. More quad-dominant than a leg press and easier to reach deep positions safely.

Frequently asked questions

Is the leg press as good as squats?

For building quad and glute size, it is close, and in some ways easier to push hard on because you can approach failure safely. For building transferable whole-body strength, bracing and balance, the squat is clearly superior. They serve different purposes — most good leg programs include both rather than choosing.

How deep should I go on the leg press?

As deep as you can while keeping your hips and lower back flat against the pad — usually around 90 degrees of knee bend or slightly past. The moment your pelvis tucks under and your lower back rounds off the pad, you have gone too far, and that position under a loaded sled is genuinely risky.

Where should I put my feet on the leg press?

Shoulder-width and mid-platform is the sensible default. Lower on the platform increases knee flexion and emphasises the quads. Higher on the platform increases hip flexion and emphasises the glutes and hamstrings. Wider stances recruit more adductor. Change one variable at a time and see what you feel.

Why does the leg press let me lift so much more than I squat?

Because the machine removes almost everything except leg strength — no balance, no spinal loading, no upper-back or core bracing — and on a 45-degree sled you are pressing only a component of the total weight rather than lifting it vertically. The numbers are not comparable, so do not read anything into the difference.
