Chin-Ups
The chin-up is a bodyweight vertical pull performed with an underhand, shoulder-width grip, pulling until your chin clears the bar. It trains the latissimus dorsi and biceps heavily — more biceps than a pull-up, because the supinated grip puts them in a stronger position. Most people can do several more chin-ups than pull-ups.

The lat is still the primary mover — the chin-up is a vertical pull, and shoulder adduction and extension are what get you to the bar. Electromyography studies find lat activation between chin-ups and pull-ups is broadly similar, which contradicts the common belief that pull-ups are the back exercise and chin-ups are the arm exercise.
What genuinely changes is the biceps. A supinated grip places the biceps in its strongest position for elbow flexion, so it contributes meaningfully more force. This is why most people can do noticeably more chin-ups, and why chin-ups are a legitimate biceps builder in their own right.
The narrower grip also allows a longer range of motion at the shoulder, letting your elbows travel further past your torso at the top. That extra range is part of why many lifters feel chin-ups more strongly in the lats despite the extra arm involvement.
As with pull-ups, the lower traps and rhomboids control the shoulder blade, and the abs and glutes hold the body rigid. The stabilising demand is what separates a strict chin-up from a machine pulldown.
How to do the chin-ups
Setup

Grip the bar with an underhand grip, hands roughly shoulder width apart.

Wrap your thumbs around the bar and keep your wrists neutral rather than bent back.

Hang with arms fully extended, letting your shoulders rise toward your ears at the bottom.

Cross your ankles behind you and squeeze your glutes so your body cannot swing.

Brace your abs and set your ribs down — avoid letting your lower back arch heavily.
Execution

Initiate by pulling your shoulder blades down and back before the elbows bend.

Pull by driving your elbows down toward your ribs, leading with your chest.

Keep your body vertical and rigid — no swinging, no piking at the hips.

Continue until your chin clears the bar without craning your neck.

Pause briefly at the top with your chest close to the bar.

Lower under control over two to three seconds until your arms are completely straight.
Common chin-ups mistakes
Swinging or kipping
Using hip drive to generate momentum. It raises the rep count while cutting the work the lats and biceps do, and the swing loads the shoulder poorly at the bottom of each rep.
The fix: Lock your legs together, squeeze the glutes, and brace hard. If strict reps are not possible yet, use a band or the assisted machine.
Partial reps
Not straightening the arms at the bottom or not clearing the chin at the top. Half reps skip the stretched position, which is where much of the growth stimulus comes from.
The fix: Full extension at the bottom, chin over the bar at the top, every rep. End the set when you can no longer hit both.
Shoulders rounding forward
The chest collapses and the shoulders roll forward as you pull, which puts the shoulder joint in a poor position and shifts work almost entirely to the arms.
The fix: Lead with your chest and keep the shoulder blades pulling down and back throughout. Think about presenting your sternum to the bar.
Dropping out of the top
Releasing tension and falling back to the hang. The lowering phase is a substantial part of the growth stimulus, and dropping into a dead hang from a bent-arm position stresses the elbows.
The fix: Take two to three seconds to lower every rep. If you cannot control the descent, reduce the number of reps rather than the quality.

Chin-ups double as back and biceps work, which makes them efficient — if you are running chin-ups twice a week you probably need less direct curl volume than you think. Because the supinated grip loads the elbow tendons, ramp up gradually if you are new to them; elbow irritation from too much chin-up volume too fast is common. Rotate with pull-ups and neutral-grip variations across training blocks.

Frequently asked questions
Are chin-ups easier than pull-ups?
For almost everyone, yes. The underhand grip puts the biceps in their strongest position for elbow flexion, so they contribute more force. Most people can do somewhere between two and five more chin-ups than pull-ups. That makes chin-ups a sensible stepping stone if you are working toward strict pull-ups.
Do chin-ups work your back or your biceps?
Both, substantially. The lats are still the primary mover, and studies find lat activation is similar between chin-ups and pull-ups. The biceps do considerably more work than in a pull-up. Treating chin-ups as purely an arm exercise underrates them — they are one of the most efficient back-and-biceps movements available.
Can chin-ups replace bicep curls?
Largely, yes, for general training. Chin-ups load the biceps heavily through a full range under substantial weight. If your goal is maximum arm size you will still benefit from some direct curl work, particularly movements that train the biceps in a stretched position, but chin-ups alone will build meaningful arm size.
Why do my elbows hurt after chin-ups?
Usually volume added too quickly. The supinated grip loads the elbow flexor tendons hard, and tendons adapt more slowly than muscle. Reduce your weekly chin-up volume, control the lowering phase rather than dropping, and rotate in neutral-grip variations, which are typically gentler on the elbow.
What grip width should I use for chin-ups?
Roughly shoulder width. Much narrower crowds the shoulders and wrists; much wider is awkward with a supinated grip and increases elbow strain. If shoulder-width supinated bothers your wrists or elbows, a neutral grip is usually the more comfortable option.
