Hip Thrust Machine
The hip thrust machine is a dedicated glute machine where you sit with your back against a pad and drive a loaded lever upward by extending your hips. It trains the gluteus maximus at peak contraction, with the setup and balance problems of a barbell hip thrust removed entirely.

The gluteus maximus is the prime mover and takes the large majority of the work, which is unusual. Most lower-body compounds split load across several muscle groups; a hip thrust is close to a glute isolation exercise that happens to use a compound joint action.
Resistance peaks where the glute is fully shortened. In a squat the glutes work hardest at the bottom, in a stretched position; in a hip thrust they work hardest at the top, at full hip extension. That difference is why the two exercises complement each other rather than duplicating.
The hamstrings assist with hip extension, and their share rises as your feet move further from your body. Feet placed too far forward turns the movement into a hamstring exercise; too close and the quads take over. Shin vertical at the top is the position that keeps the glutes dominant.
The machine's contribution is removing everything that is not glute work. There is no barbell to roll into place, no pad to balance, no need to hold the torso rigid against a bar digging into your hips, and no awkward setup between sets.
That makes it easier to train close to failure and easier to use high reps, both of which suit the glutes. The trade-off is the fixed path, which does not accommodate different limb lengths as well as a barbell setup can.
How to do the hip thrust machine

Sit on the machine with your upper back against the pad, roughly at the base of your shoulder blades.

Common hip thrust machine mistakes
Arching the lower back at the top
Hyperextending the lumbar spine to get more height, which looks like fuller hip extension but is actually the back doing the glutes' job.
The fix: Tuck your pelvis under and keep your ribs pulled down. The movement should finish with a hard glute squeeze, not a backward lean.
Placing the feet wrong
Feet too far forward makes it a hamstring exercise, feet too close makes it a quad exercise. Either way the glutes get less than they should.
The fix: Set your feet so your shins are vertical when your hips are fully extended. Check this at the top of your first rep and adjust.
Rushing the reps
Bouncing up and down at speed with no pause. The glutes are worked hardest at the top, and speed is the surest way to skip that part.
The fix: Pause for a full second at full extension on every rep and lower over two to three seconds. The load you can use will drop, and the effect on the glutes will improve.
Letting the knees cave in
Knees falling inward as you drive up, which reduces gluteus medius involvement and is often a sign the weight is too heavy.
The fix: Push your knees out slightly as you extend. A resistance band above the knees is a useful reminder if it keeps happening.
