T-Bar Row
The T-bar row is a bent-over pulling exercise performed with one end of a barbell anchored at the floor and a handle attached near the loaded end. It trains the latissimus dorsi, rhomboids and mid-traps, and the fixed pivot lets you load it heavily with a more stable bar path than a free barbell row.

The lats and teres major pull the upper arm backward and down while the rhomboids and mid-traps retract the shoulder blades. That combination is what every row trains, and the T-bar loads it with unusually little balance cost.
The anchored end is what makes the difference. Because the bar pivots around a fixed point, it can only travel on an arc, so the stabilising work that a free barbell demands is largely removed and more of your effort goes into pulling.
Handle choice changes the emphasis noticeably. A close neutral grip keeps the elbows tucked and puts the lats in a strong line of pull. A wide pronated grip flares the elbows and shifts work towards the rhomboids, mid-traps and rear delts.
The spinal erectors work isometrically throughout, holding the torso at a fixed angle against a load hanging in front of the body. On a chest-supported T-bar machine this demand disappears almost entirely, which is the main reason to choose that version.
The biceps and brachialis flex the elbow on every rep, as in any row. The neutral grip most T-bar handles provide puts the brachialis in a strong position, which is part of why heavy T-bar rows tend to leave the forearms and upper arms noticeably worked.
How to do the t-bar row
Setup

Wedge one end of a barbell into a landmine attachment, or into a corner with a towel to protect the wall.

Load plates on the free end and straddle the bar facing the anchor.

Hinge at the hips until your torso is at roughly 45 degrees or slightly lower, with knees softly bent.

Attach a V-bar handle or double-D row handle just behind the plates and take a firm grip.

Set a neutral spine, pull your ribs down and brace hard before the first rep.
Execution

Let the bar hang at arm's length and allow the shoulder blades to travel forward into a full stretch.

Pull the handle towards your lower chest or upper abdomen, leading with the elbows.

Finish by drawing the shoulder blades together and squeezing for a beat.

Keep your torso angle fixed, the chest should not rise as you pull.

Lower over two to three seconds until the arms are straight and the lats are stretched again.

Keep the head in line with the spine rather than craning it upward to look in the mirror.
Common t-bar row mistakes
Standing up as you pull
Using hip and back extension to heave the weight, so the torso rises through each rep. It moves more weight but the back muscles do less of the work, and the lower back takes the difference.
The fix: Fix the torso angle before the set and keep it there. If your chest rises as you pull, strip weight off until it does not.
Loading more than the range of motion allows
Stacking so many plates that they hit your chest well before the rep is finished, cutting the top of the movement short.
The fix: Use fewer, larger plates rather than many small ones, or switch to 15 kg plates so the handle can travel further. If the plates still block the range, the weight is likely too heavy anyway.
Rounding the lower back at the bottom
Letting the spine flex as the bar descends, especially on the final reps of a heavy set. Loaded lumbar flexion under a hinged torso is one of the higher-risk positions in the gym.
The fix: Brace before each rep and stop the set when your form changes. If tight hamstrings pull you into flexion, raise the torso angle slightly or use a chest-supported version.
Jerking the first rep off the floor
Starting each set by yanking the handle from a dead stop with the torso already loaded, which spikes force through the lower back before anything is braced.
The fix: Deadlift the bar into position, set your torso, then begin. The first rep should look like every other rep.

The T-bar row sits between a barbell row and a machine row: heavier and more demanding than a cable row, more stable and more forgiving than a free barbell. That makes it a good primary horizontal pull on a back day, typically for three to four sets of 8–12. Because the spinal erectors work isometrically throughout, take some care about placing it on the same day as heavy deadlifts. What muscles does the T-bar row work?
Mainly the latissimus dorsi and rhomboids, with the middle and lower trapezius, teres major, rear deltoids and biceps all contributing. The spinal erectors work isometrically to hold your torso in position, which is why heavy sets are felt in the lower back as well as the upper.
Is the T-bar row better than the barbell row?
It is more stable and easier to load heavily, because the anchored end removes most of the balance demand. The barbell row requires more control and carries over better to other lifts. For pure back development they are close enough that gym availability and personal comfort are reasonable deciding factors.
Can I do a T-bar row without a landmine attachment?
Yes. Wedge one end of a barbell into a corner, ideally with a towel or a folded mat to protect the wall, and load the other end. A heavy dumbbell placed over the barbell end also works to stop it sliding. The movement itself is unchanged.
Where should I pull the handle to?
To your lower chest or upper abdomen. Pulling too high towards the collarbones turns it into a rear delt and trap exercise; pulling towards the hips shortens the range. Lower chest is the position where the lats and rhomboids both get a full contraction.
Is the T-bar row bad for your lower back?
Not when the torso stays braced and the spine stays neutral. The risk comes from rounding under load or from heaving the weight with hip extension. If your lower back is already fatigued from deadlifting, the chest-supported version gives you the same back training with the spinal load removed.
